Senior Partner



Dato’ Chan Ban Eng is the Senior Partner of the Firm. He founded the practice back in 1972, and is joined by his son JJ Chan and his team in expanding the practice areas of the Firm.

In a career spanning over 48 years, he has chalked up a wealth of experience in the areas of corporate and conveyancing, landlord and tenant, admiralty and shipping, chancery, laws of clubs, societies and associations. He was amongst the few early practitioners in Penang who undertook and resisted ship arrests. He is particularly familiar with the setting up and administration of trusts and foundations. He also deals with contractual, banking and finance matters.

He contributes legal insights and strategic planning advice to several societies, welfare homes, not for profit organizations, schools and charitable trusts, of which he holds key positions. He is also the Vice-Chairman of the Executive Committee of Lam Wah Ee Hospital, which is the single largest private hospital in Penang, and a not-for-profit healthcare institution, and the Chairman of the Board of LWE Nursing College.

A member of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, he was called to the English Bar in 1968 at the age of 21. He was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court in Malaya the following year. He was appointed a notary public since 1979, and is currently the most senior notary public in Penang.
